If you’ve never had documentary-style family photos taken before, you might be wondering what that actually means.

For me, it means your session won’t be focused on perfectly posed photos from beginning to end.

I’ll still guide you, help you find flattering light, and give you direction when you need it. But a lot of the magic happens in between.

The laughs. The movement. The little hands reaching for you. The moments that actually feel like your family.

Your Kids Don’t Have to Be Perfect

This might be the most important thing I can tell parents before a session:

Your kids are allowed to be kids.

They can be shy. They can run around. They can need a snack. They can decide they absolutely do not want to smile.

You never have to apologize to me for your child’s mood.

Instead of fighting it, we work with it.

We might walk, play, cuddle, explore, or take a little break. Sometimes the moments that feel the least “perfect” end up becoming my favorite photos.

Will We Still Take Posed Photos?

Absolutely.

I love having a few classic photos where everyone is together and looking at the camera.

But we won’t stay there for long.

I may ask you to walk together, pull your kids in close, play with them, or simply look at each other instead of looking at me.

I give you a starting point, and then I photograph what happens naturally from there.

Mothers Belong in the Photos Too

Over time, my work has become more and more centered around motherhood.

Maybe it’s because I’m a mom myself, but I notice the little things.

The way your child reaches for you.

The way you automatically fix their hair or wipe their face.

The way they still want to be picked up, even when they’re getting a little too heavy.

Moms are so often the ones behind the camera.

I want you in the story too.

Not just smiling for a photo, but holding them, laughing with them, comforting them and loving them exactly as you do every day.

Someday, your children will get to look back and see what being loved by you looked like.

What Does a Family Session Actually Look Like?

There isn’t one exact formula.

Every family is different.

We might walk, play on a blanket, chase your toddler, explore the beach, dance with your baby or simply slow down and cuddle together.

Some kids warm up immediately.

Others need a little time.

Both are completely normal.

My goal isn’t to make every family look the same.

It’s to create photos that actually feel like your family.

Where Can We Take Photos in St. Petersburg?

One of my favorite things about photographing families in St. Petersburg is how many different options we have.

Your session can be at the beach, in a park, around downtown St. Pete or even right at home.

And your home does not have to look like something out of a magazine.

Home is where your kids play. Where you make breakfast. Where babies are rocked to sleep. Where so much of your family's actual life happens.

Sometimes the most ordinary places become the most meaningful photographs.

The Magic Was Never in the Pose

Of course I want you to have beautiful photos.

But more than anything, I want your gallery to remind you what this season of your family felt like.

The messy hair. The tiny hands. The personalities. The way your child fits against you right now.

Because the things that feel ordinary today are often the things we miss the most later.

And those are the moments I want to photograph.

If you’re looking for a St. Petersburg family photographer who offers gentle direction while still leaving room for real moments, I’d love to document this season of your family.
