If you’re thinking about maternity photos, one of the first questions you’ll probably have is: When should I actually schedule them?

You want your bump to be showing, but you also don’t necessarily want to wait until the point when walking barefoot down a beach at sunset sounds like an Olympic event.

For most expecting moms, there is a sweet spot.

As a maternity photographer in St. Petersburg, Florida, here’s what I recommend when planning your session.

What Is the Best Week for Maternity Photos?

For most pregnancies, around 28–34 weeks is a great time for maternity photos.

By then, your bump is usually beautifully defined, but you may still feel comfortable enough to walk, move around and enjoy your session.

That doesn’t mean there is one perfect week, though.

Every pregnancy is different. How you’re feeling, whether this is your first pregnancy, and the type of session you want can all play a part in choosing your date.

The goal isn’t to hit an exact week.

It’s to photograph this season while you still feel like yourself.

When Should I Book My Maternity Photographer?

Ideally, reach out sometime during your second trimester.

You don’t have to wait until your bump is photo-ready to get on the calendar.

Booking earlier gives us time to choose a location, talk about what to wear and find a date that falls within that ideal window.

This can be especially helpful if you’re hoping for a weekend or golden-hour session.

And honestly, once you’re in the third trimester, having one less thing on your to-do list isn’t a bad thing.

Should I Take Maternity Photos Earlier With Twins or Multiples?

Usually, yes.

If you’re expecting multiples or have a reason you may deliver earlier, scheduling your maternity photos earlier in your pregnancy can make sense.

Rather than focusing on a specific number of weeks, I’d choose a time when your bump is showing and you still feel comfortable enough to enjoy being photographed.

If you’re unsure, we can always talk through your due date and what you’re envisioning for your session before choosing a date.

Beach or Somewhere in St. Petersburg?

This is one of my favorite parts of planning a maternity session because the location completely changes how the photos feel.

If you want something soft, relaxed and a little romantic, we can head toward the beach around golden hour.

If the beach doesn’t feel like you, St. Petersburg also has beautiful greenery, historic architecture and more urban locations that give maternity photos an entirely different look.

And your session doesn’t have to be elaborate. It could also be done in the comfort of your home, and no you don't need to deep clean your house for it.

Sometimes a quiet location, beautiful light and clothes you feel good in are all we need.

What Should You Wear for Maternity Photos?

Start with something you can comfortably move in.

A fitted dress can beautifully show the shape of your bump, while a flowy dress adds movement and works especially well outdoors.

Neutral and earthy colors tend to photograph beautifully, but you don’t have to wear beige just because you’re having professional photos taken.

Think about your location, your personal style and what you actually feel good wearing.

If your partner or children will be in the photos too, coordinate rather than match. Choose colors and textures that work together without putting everyone in the exact same thing.

And if figuring out outfits is the part stressing you out, I’m always happy to help.

Can My Partner and Kids Be in My Maternity Photos?

Absolutely.

Your maternity session can be about you, or it can document your whole family right before it changes again.

If you already have a toddler or young child, I especially love including them.

They don’t need to stand next to your belly and smile perfectly at the camera. We can let them move, cuddle, explore and be themselves.

I’ll give you direction when you need it, but I want your photos to feel like your family rather than a series of poses everyone had to perform.

What If I Feel Awkward in Front of the Camera?

You do not need to know how to pose.

Most people I photograph aren’t naturally comfortable having a camera pointed at them, and I don’t expect you to arrive knowing what to do with your hands.

I’ll guide you into flattering light and give you enough direction that you never feel like you’re standing there wondering what comes next.

From there, I leave room for movement and connection.

The goal is for your maternity photos to feel beautiful without feeling overly posed.

Are Maternity Photos Really Worth It?

Pregnancy can feel incredibly long while you’re living it.

And then suddenly, it’s over.

Your camera roll will eventually fill with thousands of photos of your baby, but there will only ever be this small window when you were waiting to meet them.

Your body will change again. Your family will settle into a new normal. The tiny kicks you feel every day will become one of those things that somehow gets harder to remember.

Maternity photos give you something tangible from the before.

Before you knew their face.

Before you knew their personality.

Before they were here.
